Here's The Problem With Using FBA...

We continually see comments in the forums like this one:

Amazon changes my package dimensions from:

Length: 8.36 inches to 10 inches
Wide: 7.77 inches to 9 inches
Height: 7.48 to 9 inches
Weight: from 4.05 lbs to 4.2 lbs

I know my package dimensions are correct, as I measured the box prior to sending. The fee jumped from standard large tier to small oversize.

It doesn’t matter how long you have been selling on Amazon, eventually Amazon is going to change your dimensions for no apparent reason which will change your fee pricing structure, and quite possibly cost you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars.

What happens when your weights and dimensions are miscalculated?

Amazon allows you to preview your fulfillment fees – So checking your product’s dimensions and weight and comparing to what Amazon is charging you is essential to your profitability. Of course, you want the lowest fees possible, so paying attention really matters here.

You Give an Inch, You Lose a Mile

When you send your product to FBA, Amazon will verify the weight and dimensions of the product to calculate the Pick and Pack Fees. Amazon does this each time you send a brand new product, however can also re-measure and re-weigh existing products during receiving and change the dimensions or weight without informing the seller.

These measurements at Amazon FBA are meant to be accurate, but mistakes do happen. And, it is up to the seller to catch the mistakes, otherwise it could cause you to lose in some cases a significant amount of money if your product is pushed into a higher fee price tier.

One of our clients received a credit $67,721.43. This seller sold 200 units per day and the dimensions and weight were off by an inch. Luckily a case was opened and the money was refunded. This money that belongs you.
Amazon will reimburse FBA fees if you confirm with them that the prices were charged using inaccurate weights or dimensions. Be careful – in Seller Central, Amazon notes that “when the weight or dimensions that the seller provides vary from Amazon’s verified measurement, our measurement will govern.”

But here’s the bad news: to be eligible for reimbursement, you must submit your request within 90 days of the date that the fee was charged.
It is highly recommend to keep accurate records of your weight and dimensions with measurement and weight images prior to sending to FBA. Additionally, make sure you communicate with your suppliers not to change packaging materials without your consent, as a slight change in weight can push your product to the next fee pricing tier.

It pays to stay on top of your FBA data – and even more than that, it’s vital that you monitor your weights and dimensions on a consistent basis.
